The collection consists of a handwritten document headed "Records of the Court," listing the accounts of the estate of Daniel Saunders, possibly of Thomas County, Georgia. Administrator of the estate is Harriet Saunders. Included are the names of slaves hired 1835-1836 in accounts with John C. Browning and Shadrach Atkinson, and are dated March 1837.

The collection consists of materials relating to enslaved people and slavery in Georgia. The materials include estate appraisals for the estate of Brittain Smith (1802) and Valentine Hatcher (1812); an inventory of the estate of Valentine Hatcher (1812); and a property list of the estate of Brittain Smith (1802); a bill from Lusk, Lathrop, and Co. documenting items purchased for slaves' use (1834); and a letter (1856) from Linton Stephens in Sparta (Ga.). The appraisals and property list give the enslaved peoples' name and value. The letter (16 Dec. 1856) lists enslaved people Linton has for sale including their price, name, and age and discusses the health of several slaves.

Washington County papers include court documents; estate papers of Daniel Harris; and correspondence between the State School Commissioner, J.R. Lewis and the County Superintendent, H.N. Hollifield.

The enslaved people are listed by name and age and include Amos, 22; Ebbin, 25; Jefferson, 17; John, 1; Saphronia, 12; Charity, 3; and Antinett, 8. The administrators of the estate were Isaac Harris and Catharine Stone. The document is signed (with "X") by Catharine Stone.

The collection consists of some business papers and legal records of James Monroe Smith. The papers are concened mostly with a lawsuit against Cowan, Usry & Co., of Worth County, Georgia, and a suit contesting the disposition of the estate of Smith, who died intestate. The business papers include statements, receipts, and ledger sheets regarding "hiring convicts." The legal papers include copies of injuctions, contracts, depositions, petitions and promisory notes. The letters to and from lawyers refer to a case heard before the state court of appeals after Smith's death.
